WorldSkills Germany - fresh wind and new digital competence for Germany's (gastro) offspring
Chef Max Dolge and Restaurant Specialist Steffen Repplinger work highly concentrated while several television cameras and the keen eyes of an experienced coaching team have them in sight. I'm lugging from behind over various shoulders to catch a glimpse. The two have been training intensively for the WorldSkills World Cup for apprenticeships for three days at the Hotelfachschule Hamburg. And not only does every move for perfect Crepe Suzette have to be asleep, they also need the right digital recipes on the pan to reach their ambitious goal. Because cooking, service and digitality is the recipe for success for the successful gastronomy of the future.
As part of WorldSkills Recently, I had the great pleasure of taking part in a panel discussion on the subject of digitization in the food sector. Hubert Romer, Managing Director of WorldSkills Germany eV, Steffen Ganders, Senior Manager of Corporate Affairs Samsung Electronics GmbH and Christian Stromann of Sternefresser were also present.
While Max and Steffen continue their training in the kitchen with star chef Christian Krüger and experienced cooking and service experts at full steam, we speak In the Digital Talk in the intensive exchange with the public about the changes in the food scene through digitization, the Internet, social media channels and blogs. It's about networking of restaurateurs, cooks, guests and bloggers, about transparency, democratization of high cuisine, public restaurant reviews, rating portals, the attitude of star chefs, the globalization of food trends and the mutual inspiration and sharing of know-how The conclusion: not only the field of knowledge workers will continue to change rapidly due to the digital development, the apprenticeship professions in the catering industry are also facing a significant change. And that's why the gastro youngsters have to be prepared very intensively today. Thus, the Hotelfachschule Hamburg has already equipped their classes with interactive digital SmartBoards. The use of the Internet for industry-relevant further education and research is just as thick on the curriculum as the digital discovery of new markets, products or services. The strengthening of digital skills is undoubtedly one of the key prerequisites for professional success in the future.
The funding initiative WorkSkills This is why it has set itself two goals: to motivate young talents in their (apprenticeship) profession and, secondly, to actively contribute to better orienting training in Germany to the demands of the digital workplace. A stronger digital component could also make training occupations in the catering industry more attractive to young people. It is definitely not about the placement of individual products, but much more about the promotion of digital literacy in general, said Steffen Ganders during the Digital Talk. The man spoke to me from the heart, because I see in Germany in general a huge need for further training in digital issues, in terms of Internet and media literacy. Ms. Pimpi has published an interesting article on media literacy in younger students with many helpful links. And Sascha Lobo recently angered the adult fellow citizens with a mirror of stubborn digital politics. So, where better to tackle a rapid improvement in digital and media literacy than in school, where today, for the most part, new means of communication are still being marginalized as disturbing and digital developments are being ignored? A very good plan, therefore, follow the WorldSkills and Samsung there.
The concept seems to work in any case, because the participants of the national and European excretions have been working parallel to the job for two years hard on their goal: a title in the To pick world championships. For the trainees, they are the models that vividly connect the old school with digital thinking. In the next few weeks, they will again really accelerate, train and let the experts put the finishing touches. The competitions are all about know-how, excellent time management, strong nerves and routine at the highest level.
Thank you very much for an exciting morning! Girls and Boys from the German National Team Vocational Professions: I'm definitely going to punch you both!
The WorldSkills World Championships will take place from August 11th to 16th in SaoPaolo. All information on dates and the funding initiative on worldskillsgermany.com.
